About the concept of crowding disease and sanitary lot in modern intensive aquaculture : a short note ArchiMer

Algal food cultures at the centre océanologique du Pacifique ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
The CENTRE OCEANOLOCIQUE DU PACIFIQUE (cap), a laboralory of the french agency CENTRE NATIONAL POUR L'EXPLOITATlON DES OCEANS (CNEXO), is located at Vairao in the southern part of TAHITI island, French Polynesia. Most of the island is surrounded with a coral reef delimitating a lagoon. Around the COP, the lagoon forms a NW-SE basin, 40 m of maximum depth, fed in oceanic water by the combing of the open-sea swell over the barrier reef, so that the renewal rate of the lagoon water is once every day or every second day according to the strength of the waves. Compte-rendu d'expérimentation : comparaison entre l'Acal et le Frippak utilisés en nurserie de Penaeus vannamei ArchiMer

Deux séries d'expérimentation ont été menées pour tester les performances en nurserie des deux microparticules mises au point dans le groupe IFREMER/FA/SANOFI : l'ACAL et le FRIPPAK FLAKES. Alors qu'en survie et en croissance en taille (longueur totale) aucune différence n'est mise en évidence, l'ACAL permet de produire des prégrossies de poids sec supérieur et nettement plus résistantes aux chocs de salinité que le FRIPPAK.

Constitution of broodstock, maturation, spawning and hatching systems for Penaeid shrimps int the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
The Centre National pour l'Exploitation des Océans (CNEXO) has developed a tropical aquaculture program. For this, the CNEXO reckons on the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique (COP) , located in TAHITI (French Polynesia), and the Station d'Aquaculture de St-Vincent, located in NEW CALEDONIA. Douze ans d'aquaculture tropicale ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
An important part of global aquaculture production comes from countries situated in the tropical "belt". Aquaculture in these countries must undergo significant development in the coming decade. Progress in aquaculture development has been underway for the last ten years. High temperatures lead to rapid and continuous growth allowing for year-round production and utilisation of vast coastal areas with unexploited brackish water. Countries interested by this activity are by and large developing countries and the socio-economic conditions are favourable, with an abundant workforce, high local demand and the need create export markets.

Elevage larvaire de pénéides en milieu tropical ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
With a view of utilizing to the maximum and raising separately the spawn of Peneid shrimps obtained from captive brood stock, the team of the Oceanographic Center of the Pacific of CNEXO adapted the technic of small volume, high density perfected by the Galveston labora­tory to tropical conditions. The environmental conditions, particularly year-round high temperatures, allowed the development of a simple hatchery, demanding a minimum investment. The water, previously chlorinated, then deahlorinated, is only renewed from the mysis stage onward. In order to develop oysters culture in the South Pacific Islands and especially in French Polynesia, trials for producing spats of C. gigas in controlled conditions were conducted at the Centre Oaéanologique du Pacifique of the CNEXO in Tahiti. Tropical water environment (high temperature all year round and low productivity) led to the development of particular technics fir maintaining the brood stock. The purpose of feeding marine animaIs (shrimps and fish) has been examined by CNEXO in a tropical area (Tahiti, French Polynesia) fer developing aquaculture with intensive methods. A food pilot plant unit has been built in 1973 in order to make water-stable pellets. The rirst step is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of such a unit with an experimental alm. The method described in this paper originates from the adaptation of equipment which works by moistening different meals. An extrusion without steam occurs through a granulating press followed by a drying operation in a sun drier, which works with an addition al heat exchanger. First results of a 10 ha Macrobrachium farm in Tahiti ArchiMer

The Office de la Recherche et Ressources Océaniques (O.R.E.R.O.) in Tahiti and the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique (COP) have developed together for 10 years the whole set of techniques to culture Macrobrachium rosenbergii : hatchery systems, feed formulations and locally produced pellets, nursery and grow-out ponds. Intensive larval culture of Macrobrachium rosenbergii : a cost study ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
Pilot scale larval culture of Macrobrachium rosenbergii began in Tahiti at the end of 1976. Since then, four batches of postlarvae (2.3 millions) have been produced. Operating expenses cost was $13-35/thousands postlarvae. Based on the results obtained from the pilot program, we can project the cost of a commercial scale hatchery producing 10 million postlarvae/ year at $12/1,000. This includes construction and equipment costs. Due to the high cost of living in Tahiti, this figure would undoubtedly be lower in many other regions. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Intensive larval rearing of Macrobrachium rosenbergii in recirculating system ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
Growing ponds for the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii are most of the time far from the seat and good quality fresh or sea water may also be in short supply seasonally. With an open system with water exchange every day the hatcheries have to be located near the sea whereas closed systems allow to set free from environmeneal conditions, and have been developed in Tahiti (Centre Océanologique du Pacifique) in collaboration with the ORERO (Office de la Recherche et de l'Exploitation des Ressources Océaniques formerly Fisheries Service). Larval rearing and spat production of green mussel Mytilus viridis linnaeus in french Polynesia ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
To develop mussel culture in the South Pacific and especially in French Polynesia, trials for producing spat of Mytilus viridis were conducted at the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique (Cap) of the Centre National pour l'Exploitation des Océans (CNEXO) in Tahiti. Spawning is attained through thermal stimulation. Larval rearing is conducted in 800-liter cylindroconical tanks. Every two days the water is changed and antibiotics are added as a preventive treatment. Monochrysis lutheri and an Isochrysis locally isolated are used as food. Metarmorphosis and settlement are achieved between the 10th and 17th days. A 15 m3 tank supplied with flowing water from a shrimp rearing pond is used for the pre-growth. Macrobrachium rosenbergii culture in Polynesia : pH control in experimental pond waters by phytoplankton limitation with an algicide ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
Macrobrachium rosenbergii ponds at the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique are subject to increases in pH exceeding 10.5 during growing experiments. The high levels of pH are responsible for mortality of prawns, especially when molting. The photosynthetic activity of dense phytoplankton blooms are primarily responsible for high pH. The algicide Clarosan (CIBA-Geigy) was used to thin phytoplankton blooms. Experiments showed that treatments with 0.02 mg/liter result in a rapid fall in the pH. At this dose Clarosan is not deleterious to the prawns. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Mass production of juveniles of freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii in french Polynesia : predevelopment phase results ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
Since 1973, a new method for mass production of Macrobrachium rosenbergii post-larvae has been set up in french Polynesia in CNEXO-COP centre in collaboration with Territorial Fisheries Service. The larvae are reared in clear water daily renewed, without phytoplankton and at hight density. 90 post-larvae per liter are obtained within six weeks on a diet of Artemia nauplii and inert particles. Since 1976, a pilot hatchery is working and ten pilot scale productions gave 4.6 million juveniles. The technology is described and the production costs discussed. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]
